19 Settembre 2020 | 17 Gennaio 2021

A monographic exhibition about Marc Chagall: a selection of more than 100 works, ca. 70 canvas and paper paintings and 2 extraordinary series of engravings and acquaforte produced in the first years of his separation from Russia, “Ma Vie” 20 panels highlighting his early and painful autobiography and Gogol’s “Dead Souls”, the deepest look on the Russian soul of great literature.

The works exposed at Palazzo Roverella are lent by the Artist’s heirs, with a huge and generous loan, by the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow, by the State Russian Museum at St. Petersburg, by the Pompidou in Paris, by the Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid and by the Kunstmuseum in Zurich e by important and historic private collections, with some of the greatest masterpieces, such as “the Walk”, ”The Jew in Rose”, “The Wedding”, “The Cock”, “Black glove” and more.

The theme on which the curator Claudia Zevi has chosen to measure herself is the influence that Russian popular culture has had on all of Chagall’s work, with major realistic impact when he lived in the first twenty years of the twentieth century, but

Il tema su cui la curatrice Claudia Zevi ha scelto di misurarsi è quello dell’influenza che la cultura popolare russa ha avuto su tutta l’opera di Chagall, con maggiore impatto realistico quando viveva nella Russia del primo ventennio del novecento, ma equally strongly, in the figures of animals, houses and villages, that are always present in the paintings of his long successive years in Paris, in America, in the south of France.

In his works memories become “presences”, they Nelle sue opere i ricordi divengono “presenze”, populate his paintings appearing even where you do not expect them, l ike goats or isbas inserted in the representation of a bouquet which is in turn composed of flowers and visions.

“My Russia will love me, too”, are the words at the end of his “Ma Vie”, the illustrated autobiography that Chagall published when he was 34, in Berlin at the beginning of the exile, aware that this time the separation from Russia would be final.
