Van Gogh, Monet, Degas
Oct. 26th to March 1st 2020 – Padua, Palazzo Zabarella
The Fondazione Bano continues its exhibition project aimed at displaying some of the most prestigious private collections in the world, which have since become public.
Palazzo Zabarella hosts, exclusively in Italy, over seventy masterpieces by Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh and others, celebrating Paul and Rachel ‘Bunny’ Lambert Mellon, two of the most important and refined benefactors of the twentieth century.
The exhibition, curated by Colleen Yarger, presents a precious selection of works from the Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Arts, covering a chronological timeframe from the mid-nineteenth century to the early decades of the twentieth century.
Paul Mellon, son of the entrepreneur, banker and Secretary of the United States Treasury, Andrew Mellon, also an important art collector, who was instrumental in founding the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1937, donated to the National Gallery over a thousand works from both his father’s collection and his own.
His studies at Yale and Cambridge instilled a great interest in English art, but it was only after his marriage to Bunny Lambert, an art lover and a passionate Francophile, that the Mellons began to buy masterpieces of French art. In addition to donations to the National Gallery in Washington, the couple donated an important collection of French works to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond.
