The Marostica Chess Match with Living Chess Pieces
On the second weekend of September, the magnificent Piazza degli Scacchi hosts and brings to life the story of the daughter of the Castellano of Marostica and the two young men, Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, who vie for the hand of the beautiful Lionora.
The legend of the Chess Match dates back to 1454, when Marostica was one of the most loyal supporters of the Republic of Venice.
It was in that very year that two valiant warriors, Rinaldo D’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, fell madly in love with the beautiful Lionora, daughter of Castellan Taddeo Parisio, and to win her hand…
Today, just as back then, the excitement is renewed.

The show opens on Friday, September 4, at 9:00 p.m. and will be performed again on Saturday, September 5, at 9:00 p.m., Friday, September 11, at 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, September 12, at 9:00 p.m.
Each performance can accommodate approximately 3,600 spectators, who are seated in comfortable grandstands with numbered seats.
